Georgia Tech plans SEZ
timesofindia.indiatimes.com January 13, 2008 The world-renowned Georgia Institute of Science and Technology (Georgia Tech) has sought 250 acres of land in order to set up a special economic zone (SEZ) focusing on research and industrial collaboration apart from the offshore campus that the institute is planning on the outskirts of Hyderabad. The institute was in talks with the state government for starting a 100-acre campus, the first outside the 400-acre sprawling institute in the heart of Atlanta in Georgia, US. "Now, however, they have expressed the intention of starting a SEZ as well apart from the campus and the government is inclined to clear the proposal," an official told TOI. State government officials say Georgia Tech being among the top ten US public universities, its presence in Hyderabad in the form of the SEZ and an overseas campus will greatly boost the academic credentials of Andhra Pradesh. "Not only is it among the top ten public universities in the US, but it is also a leading research university, and its forays into nanotechnology and semi-conductors will be a boon for students here. The SEZ will be a great added incentive," the official said.

Brain drain? That's so nineties
thestar.com January 12, 2008 Just a decade ago Canadians watched what seemed like a relentless poaching of the country's top minds. Now the trend is being reversed thanks to the Canada Research Chairs program. Even so, the lauded program is not without its critics. Started in 2000, the chairs program has led to $2 billion being pumped into universities by the federal government. This comes in the form mainly of $100,000 annual grants for promising young researchers who hold junior chairs and $200,000 for established researchers in senior chairs. But the Canada Research Chairs are now at a crossroads. Although federal funding of $300 million a year is pledged until 2011, that's only enough to keep the program ticking along, offering little hope for junior researchers to move up and providing for only a minimal amount of new blood.

Nature journal digitises archive
bbc.co.uk January 12, 2008 The entire archives of the prestigious science journal Nature, stretching back to the first issue on 4 November 1869, have been made available online. Previously, only issues going back to 1950 were accessible on the net. The pre-1950s Nature archives include seminal moments in science history, from the theory of mechanical flight to the discovery of nuclear fission. Full access to the archives requires a personal subscription, but most of the content of the accompanying history site is free, such as a blog where anyone can vote and comment on their favourite Nature paper. Will the synthesis of C60, a spherical form of carbon that forms the backbone of many developments in nanotechnology (and a personal favourite of Campbell's) triumph over the discovery of the hole in the ozone layer, or perhaps any of Nature's odder publishing moments?
Sono-Tek Announces Third Quarter Earnings
Sono-Tek Corporation January 12, 2008 Sono-Tek Corporation (OTC Bulletin Board: SOTK) today announced sales of $1,560,558 for the three months ended November 30, 2007 compared to sales of $1,624,015 for the same period of last year, a decrease of 4% or $63,457. For the nine months ended November 30, 2007, the Company reported sales of $4,207,724, a decrease of 20% or $1,031,974, compared to sales of $5,239,698 for the same period of last year. The most notable reason for the decrease in the Company's nine months sales level is the softness in the electronics market caused by the slowdown in the housing and automotive sectors. These two business sectors are significant users of printed circuit boards, which in turn affects sales of fluxing units. Net income for the three and nine month periods ended November 30, 2007 was $23,649 and $55,632, respectively, compared to $114,143 and $472,810, respectively for prior year periods. The decreases in net income are mainly a result of reduced sales volumes and the Company's continued support of its business development program.
